Friday Night Funkin’ (stylized as FRIDAY NIGHT FUNKIN’ and often abbreviated to FNF) is an open-source[2] donationware rhythm game first released in 2020 for a game jam.[3] The game was developed by a team of four Newgrounds users, Cameron “ninjamuffin99” Taylor, David “PhantomArcade” Brown, Isaac “Kawai Sprite” Garcia, and evilsk8r. The game shares some gameplay features with Dance Dance Revolution and PaRappa the Rapper and borrows aesthetic influences from Flash games.[4] The game has been credited with driving users back to Newgrounds, a site whose popularity peaked in the early 2000s.
The game mainly revolves around the player character, Boyfriend, who must defeat a variety of characters in singing and rapping contests in order to continue dating his love interest, Girlfriend. Gameplay revolves around hitting notes with timed inputs while avoiding running out of health for the duration of the song.[5][6]
The game was initially created for the Ludum Dare 47 game jam in October 2020.[7] A full version backed on Kickstarter titled Friday Night Funkin’: The Full Ass Game is under development.[8]
Pibby (also known as Come and Learn with Pibby!, Learning with Pibby, or Pibby: Apocalypse) is an action-horror metafictional pilot uploaded to Adult Swim’s YouTube channel on October 30, 2021. Its creator, Dodge Greenley (known for his work on Nickelodeon shows such as Sanjay and Craig and Pinky Malinky), has stated that he plans for it to become a full series, but that any further development hinges on viewers’ reactions to the initial short, which doubles as both proof of concept and a trailer.
Pibby is a cute little girl who stars in her own educational cartoon for preschoolers (Learning with Pibby), learning about things like spelling and caring with all of her cuddly animal friends. However, this all comes to a screeching halt when a glitchy, eldritch blob suddenly invades her world, consuming and absorbing all of her friends. Just as she is about to be eaten herself, Pibby finds herself in the credits of her own show.
Soon, she finds herself traveling to other worlds – that is, other cartoons (both real and fictional) – and discovering that they are also under threat of being assimilated into this nightmarish abomination. While her newfound allies doubt that they’ll be able to deal with such an apocalyptic problem, Pibby holds out hope that there’s a way of beating back the darkness – but before then, she’ll need to learn a lot more than she ever hoped to.
The trailer/short/pilot (titled “Come and Learn with Pibby!”) can be seen here. As part of an April Fools’ Day 2022 stunt, Adult Swim had Pibby, BunBun, and the glitch blob invade multiple shows, leading to renewed interest in the characters and speculation of a future for the series. The full “corrupted” broadcast can be seen here, while highlights of Pibby and company can be seen here.
My Life as a Teenage Robot is an American animated science fiction superhero comedy television series created by Rob Renzetti for Nickelodeon. It was produced by Frederator Studios and Nickelodeon Animation Studio.[2][3] Set in the fictional town of Tremorton, the series follows the adventures of a robot super-heroine named XJ-9, or Jenny, as she prefers to be called, who attempts to juggle her duties of protecting Earth while trying to live a normal human life as a teenage girl.[4]
Renzetti pitched the series to Frederator Studios’ animated shorts showcase Oh Yeah! Cartoons and a pilot titled “My Neighbor is a Teenage Robot”, which aired on January 5, 1999.[3] Viewer approval ratings led to the commissioning of a half-hour series, which premiered on August 1, 2003; after airing its first two seasons, the series was cancelled on October 17, 2005. The completed third season eventually aired on Nickelodeon’s spinoff network Nicktoons from October 4, 2008, until ending its run on May 2, 2009. The series totaled three seasons, each consisting of 13 episodes.
