Sorry this video is a bit more serious, next video is a return to form. I just felt like I needed to talk about this heading into the rest of 2022. Hopefully my story resonates with a few people, and hopefully i’ve convinced you to try out some other genres of games.

I’ve been playing video games for, as long as I can remember. I can remember the first time I held a controller in my hands vividly. The sheer size of the Duke way too massive for me at the time, but all that was just background noise in my head compared to the fresh sights and sounds of what is now my second favorite entry in my favorite franchise ever. Gaming during this time period was, limitless. I had no concept of developer or hardware restrictions, the limits of pre-generated responses from NPC’s or content in the game to consume. Halo was an infinite universe to create in and experience, Spyro had no end to the amount of dragons I could rescue, hell I can remember using an action replay in Pokemon Platinum, using the walk through walls cheat, and accidentally finding shaymin at the end of this long path of flowers.
Come early 2021 it was time for me to upgrade, and after managing to walk into a best buy and just randomly come across a 3090 that I wasn’t even looking to buy at the time, I knew it was time to go all out. I managed to get a 5950x, the best motherboard I could buy at the time, and some sick RAM, there were NO compromises to this system, besides the fans I was running out of money. I built the computer, ran some benchmarks, and then didn’t play any games. At first I assumed I was just unmotivated, or maybe even burnt out, but over time I came to realize that I just wasn’t enjoying games anymore. I got scared, scared that I spent all of this money on a hobby I wasn’t interested in anymore, scared that the youtube channel I wanted to start was already dead in the water, scared that I’d be giving up a huge part of what formed my online identity.
I calmed myself down, and took a step back. It makes sense that I’d start feeling this way about gaming, doing anything pretty much every day for long enough would ultimately become mundane and boring, what can I do to have fun with playing games again. For awhile I was stumped, but during my time I decided to just take a break and work on my Ultrakill video, and while that was technically still gaming, it was mostly for work and I could take the time to figure out what I wanted to really do about my problem.
What I found though is that as I was taking a break from playing games for the most part, my desire to play them started rising again. But once I actually managed to get into a game and started playing, my desire to continue playing them would immediately fall, and I’d get off of it within 30 minutes.
What I came to realize is that I had no variety in what I was playing. I would get on my computer and boot up the same FPS games, or just open up Minecraft, which I’ve been playing for years as well. I decided to actually take the the time and figure out other genres of games I could play, and I’ve never been happier for it. I realized that what I was experiencing overall wasn’t me not finding games fun anymore, I just wasn’t finding FPS games as interesting.
Throughout 2021 I decided to take the effort to branch out into different video games, and what I learned was that I still enjoyed playing video games, I just needed a breath of fresh air. I played games like Forza Horizon, Monster Hunter, Ghostrunner, Spent some time on Spyro, replayed Sonic Generations, Sonic Unleashed, Cities Skylines, Dark Souls, Demon Souls, all of these games made me appreciate just, playing playing games in general, and reignited my love for the hobby.
This peaked when Halo Infinite was released. For 6 years I waited for a follow up to Halo 5, I watched any lore video I could come across, scoured reddit posts and twitter threads that discussed what would happen in this game and tried keeping up with the game as much as I possibly could. I’ve already talked about Halo a lot on my channel, so keep my bias in mind, but this game gave me hope for new releases. Did I have issues with Halo Infinite’s campaign, of course, but how GOOD the gameplay was kept me from noticing them as much as I could have.
videogames aren’t fun anymore OR what I played first time when I was 12 y/o.
Just play EU4 lol.
I 100% agree with you. That's why I question everybody including fake ass big gaming streamers when they all say "games arent fun anymore, there's nothing to play". I recently found a channel that looks for physical games and he resales them. Phoenix resale is the channel and he's making me realize that there are soooooooo many games out there that people want to get rid of from indie games, to limited editions, to sealed products, etc. There's so many PS, XBOX, WII, PSP, Hand held, DS and Switch games that People probably never heard of. People probably sell their consoles because its just collecting dust because they want games to be digital and not value a physical game and even couch games anymore
im still a child and i find fps really boring with people who havent touched grass in 69 years and dont like other players fun
Eating isn't fun anymore. I have been doing it since I was a baby and I just came to a point where I'm just really tired of eating. It just got so repetitive.
But still fun at the same time
Old games really are better
Tbh, I vehemently disagree with the design philosophy of most video games/mods/modpacks and see how they could improve in so many different ways. I hope one day I can use AI to assist me in creating a video game that is more to my tastes. One where combat is exhilarating, strategy is vital, fights actually feel balanced(so fucking rare), and the story will touch you emotionally and the theme is unique. If we reach AGI(artificial general intelligence) or something close to it, who knows what could be possible. I won't design the levels(so it would be new to me), but will be the director and give it the prompt and then playtest. In the mean time, I should definitely try out more games…
No shit playing the same genre of games makes playing games boring as fuck
Pizza tower.
I haven’t gotten past 2:24 but I’m starting to think you don’t really get as much fun out of gaming when you get better computer parts because not you constantly think about what’s next or what new games can I get this to run instead of jut playing games for fun you not play games to try to prove that you have a good computer
There are still some good ones out there but This is the best take ive seen in a long time but for real after Borderland 2 every game could not keep me wanting to play more and more like i did playing older games. To many people play these new PVP games that are just the same as the last… I bought my self a E-bike and i feel like a kid again Mabby you should to x3
I think you just grew up
Back here after the redemption
I was a teen in the early 2000 and as far as I know movies always had the upper hand and video games were something you didn’t want to bring up in a conversation. Man I miss those days when I used to purchase ps2 magazines after school.
Ultrakill is boring, ok
Ive been having a blast catching up on games i wanted as a kid and never got to play. Games on ps2 and ps1, eventually will get some xbox games i never played and maybe even dreamcast.
Guess the fun for me in gaming lies in catching up. I do like some newer games. But not many have the same passion and humor and charm like old video games had.
“You should get out of your confort zone and try different games” MONEEYY, some peoples parents dont like to spend alot of money on games
tnx man
bro the two reasons all we need
1. rushing the games out pple rushing the devs
and the devs rushing the games
2. yall expect such high GRAPHICS that the devs focus less on story and gameplay because they cant cuz if the game ain't 4k or better its gotta look so fn real that yall are literally forcing the devs to not make good story's or gamplay cuz all their FUCKING TIME IS ON GRAPHICS AND ITS YALLS FAULT
LOOK BACK GAMES WITH WORSE GRAPHICS HAVE AMAZING STORYS AND GAMEPLAY CUZ YALL GREEDY FUCKERS DIDNT HOUND AND FUCKING COMPLAIN ABOUT HOW REAL A GAME LOOKS
IVE LITERALLY STOPPED PLAYING ANY GAMES THAT HAVE HIGH GRAPHICS CUZ I KNOW THAT IF ITS HIGHLY VISUAL THEY DIDNT PUT AS MUCH TIME INTO THE STORY AND GAMPLAY
I FOUND A FN PIXEL GAME THAT HAS WAY BETTER STORY AND GAMPLAY ITS THE BEST GAME IVE EVER PLAYED AND I GOT INVESTED IN THE STORY AND THEY DID SUCH A GOOD JOB ON THE STORY AND THE GAMEPLAY HAS SUCH FLUIDITY THAT IT JUST FEELS SO GOOD TO PLAY AND ITS CHALLENGING TO THE POINT WHEN I KILL A BOSS I ACTUALLY FEEL ACCOMPLISHED AGAIN AFTER SO LONG OF PLAYING HIGH GRAPHICS GAMES THAT SUCK STORY AND GAMEPLAY WISE THAT IT MADE ME HATE PLAYING GAMES
IF THEY INVEST LESS TIME INTO THE DAMN GRAPHICS THEY CAN FOCUS ON EVERYTHING ELSE
SO YES ITS YALLS GOD DAMN FAULT FOR RUSHING THEM
AND HAVING SUCH FUCKING HIGH EXPECTATIONS FOR GRAPHICS ITS SADDENING
STOP WITH THE REALISTIC GRAPHIC EXPECTATIONS AND ACTUALLY LET THEM TAKE THEIR TIME AND FOCUS ON EVERYTHING ELSE
WORSE GRAPHICS= BETTER GAMPLAY AND STORY
SO I HOPE YALL ARE HAPPY WITH YALLS FN SELVES
YALL EXPECT TO MUCH GRAPHIC WISE
I mostly just play with my eso guild. I don't like dealing with super emotional people who take video games way too seriously. I'm too old to deal with people who should be old enough to regulate their own emotions. It should be fun not negative.
Gaming had little to no faith before the Atari, and Nintendo. Games may be more of a buisness model, but that's why bigger games are possible now like Elden Ring, STAR WARS: Jedi Fallen Order, Spider-Man PS4, GTA 5, RDR2, and God of War. If games didn’t get help from big publishing like EA or Activision, we'd have less games of higher-caliber. Games suffer from success, and buisnesses follow a financial policy that doesn't allign with gamers most of the time.
My Summer Car is a game i'd recommend, it's funny, replayable and all around generally an interesting and challenging game.
Video games are nothing more than a massive waste of life.
No, you just keep on playing the same game everyday and at the end of the road you just get burned out and say “Video games are boring”, try a variery of games then talk.
I don't think its so much "gaming isn't fun anymore", but "games just suck". Speaking as an FPS gamer with countless 1000's of hours in these types of games, it feels like the FPS industry has turned into corporate greed, games aren't developed to be fun anymore, they're made to make money, not to mention most of them are fairly old so content gets recycled ALL THE TIME and devs still ask for 100's of dollars every year in season passes, microtransactions and locking stuff behind paywalls forcing FOMO. Look at the top FPS games on the market right now, Destiny 2, MW2, Siege, Apex, Overwatch, Valorant ect… I imagine a lot of us are familiar with these games, including myself, and the one thing I've noticed with every single one of them is lack of community support. Go do some digging in these popular game forums, or through socials and see how players react to the states of the game and how the dev team reacts, you wont because you and your opinions don't matter to the the devs as long as you continue to give them money. Keep in mind, my views are influenced as a Destiny player
Liar
For me, i hate video games now because its just such a money grab, a decent pc or consle is 1-2 thousand, then the games are 80 to 100 each, then there are dlcs and whatnot. It wasnt like that when i was a kid. And on top of that, 99% of video games are exactly the same
You're just mad. video games are still fun, you're just crazy.
I’ve been gaming for 30 years! since I was really young.I still have huge interest in retro games (16 bit era )but modern games; I’m completely loosing interest in them.
during the past 2 years,I built an expensive high end PC (right when there was GPU shortage),then sold in after few months.then bought both PS5 and Series X,but got bored with both after 4-5 months and sold them both.
then build another high end PC 6 months ago, played a couple of games, but I’m now thinking of selling it and this time move on from modern gaming for good.
I just don’t find modern gaming fun anymore.
People like this need to see a indie game instead of a AAA game
Lucky you I'm hating almost every game I'm playing. Mind you I have all three systems and I tell you the playstation is my worst purchased. I only like Astros playroom and Miles was ok. But man I was so exited to play spiderman remastered and I swear most people like boring repetitive games. What i expected is nothing like the actual game i was shown. nothing but go around and do the same thing 15 times. I beat shocker then I get to black cat and she sets up cameras around the city, then I do that and now the bombs around the city. I can't take It and deleted it. I just got my ps5 specific for spiderman and I'm let down now with spiderman 2 I don't want it. My xbox is collecting dust and my switch apart from smash I hate every game on it. Metro I'd dread coming off my face fusion kissed me off. No matter the genre I can't take it. I put in redidt why spiderman and someone wrote he likes the story and characters and gameplay is secondary…game is secondary in a video game littlery might as well watch a movie. God of war I got to the first boss and had enough. Cod was my MP game and now that sucks. I enjoy so little now it's not even worth it anymore. I don't care for starfield and xbox just throws crap at the wall to see what sticks. Im hoping stalker 2 and perfect dark are good cause i just gave up on AC mirage. I thought the Xbone and ps4 generation was the worst but at least they had some decent games this generation is complete ass. Halfway into The life of these consoles and nothing.
Simply, new games are shit. Say a title and i will tell you why it's shit, and why an older game of that type is 5x better (with examples). With very few exceptions.
The reason they aren't fun anymore because all video games are about now is how competitive it can be it ain't about having fun it's about how much wins you have it's about how high your kd is it's about how much kills you have it's not about having fun no more because all people care about now is being the best being at the very top of the leaderboard it's kinda pathetic really
i will try it
GAMES ARENT FUN ANYMORE??? Say that to Hollow Knight, Dead Cells, Hades, Celeste, Cult of the Lamb, Zelda Tears of the Kingdom, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Sonic Frontiers, Doom Eternal, Mortal Kombat 11 and Cuphead! SAY IT TO ANY INDIE GAME
Sounds like a you problem
Yeah right minecraft exactly
Nerfing in pve to make you farm for the new shiny thing is old, pvp is just bad 90% of the time with poor balancing, lazy design by limiting the players ability to perform from pointless animations, unskippable cutscenes, lazy story telling, the rpg elements that ruin every pve experience to come out in the past 10 years, tryhards, metaslaving, & pointless grind has ruined gaming
Thank you.
Then play something else.
DISLIKE DISLIKE YES THEY"RE FUN DISLIKE BLIND GUY
Its called growing up. If you think video games are fun after age 18, you have developmental issues
TL;DR: The Host says the problem isn't that modern games suck. It's that you need to try new games.
I have started to play games from 10 years ago.
Just find a game that you think you would like and then mod skyrim to be just like it
bruh I took a 4 month break and still cant play XD :'-)
The problem is graphics, leaves nothing to the imagination, nothing feels special because every blade of grass is now made extra special. And when everything is special, nothing is.
well, time to play terraria for the 3Ds.
list of varied games i like for those with this problem:
hollow knight – really good metroidvania
factorio – amazing factory building sandbox game, but maybe avoid this one if you want to do anything else for the next 48 hours
portal 2 – favorite game of all time, amazing puzzles
metro exodus – if your pc can run it, it's really good
pretty much any doom game – not the deepest of experiences, but very fun and difficult
a hat in time – great mario-64 like with a surprising amount of content
rimworld – colony building game, enough mods to make a second game
stardew valley – only farming game I've ever enjoyed
dishonored – great stealth/story fps, cool choices, second one if you like it enough
prey (2017) – similar to dishonored, by the same people, but more of a spiritual successor to:
bioshock – 1 and 2, recommend the originals rather than the remasters if you can get them to run on your computer. all time classic
terraria – pretty well-known 2d sandbox game, lots of bossfights and another game with tons of mods
enter the gungeon – funny top-down twinstick shooter roguelike. even if you don't know what some of those words mean, still great game
outer wilds – not to be confused with the outer worlds. cannot recommend this enough. story driven roguelike. DO NOT SPOIL YOURSELF.
valheim – terraria but 3d and viking themed. also really good.
octodad: dadliest catch – hilarious rage-game. there is no reason this has such a low metacritic score, it's a great game.
project zomboid – tough-as-nails zombie apocalypses survival game with permadeath.
vessel – difficult indie 2d puzzle game. very thematic, might require some looking-up.
control – cool 3rd person shooter with a bizarre story and cool brutalist architecture, if that's your thing. made by the people who made alan wake.
dead space – all time classic, really scary if it's your first time playing. slightly less scary once you get a certain weapon.
goat simulator – sadly somewhat short on content, but still entertaining to play around with for a while.
slime rancher – ok maybe i lied about stardew valley. much more chill than some other games on this list.
stanley parable – funny story-driven game about a guy in an office
singularity – relatively little-known linear fps that still holds up today. also a little bit scary.
spelunky – one of the few "rage games" i like. platformer roguelike
the swapper – difficult 2d puzzle game with a dark story and some pretty cool graphics.
deus ex: human revolution – good story driven semi-linear rpg fps game. not too groundbreaking, but still fun.
dark souls series – reaaally hard if you don't know what you're doing, but you figure things out eventually. interesting story, mechanics, and really good combat.
titanfall 2 – movement shooter to end all movement shooters. if you're having server problems, look into the northstar client- community hosted servers
ultrakill – doom with a retro 3d style. nuff said.
and that's it, I've gone through almost all the major games in my steam library. hope this helps
